The two documented applications
BMW’s original F87 training identifies the N55B30T0. BMW’s 2019 US M2 Competition documentation identifies the S55 and describes revised cooling arrangements. Both can have a manual gearbox or M DCT, which is another service-relevant distinction.
Build a useful service record
Confirm the car
Use the VIN, production information and service records to establish engine and gearbox. A badge, registration year or online listing can be incomplete, especially if the car has been modified.
Name the actual job
Write down what you intend to service: plugs, an air filter, engine oil or a gearbox-related item. Then obtain the current procedure and parts application for that exact job and vehicle.
Check the source scope
Look for the engine designation, transmission and market in the procedure. If the instructions only say “M2” and show an unfamiliar engine bay, stop and resolve that mismatch before disassembly.
What this reference deliberately does not specify
There is no shared torque table, fluid capacity, plug part number or maintenance interval here. Some components may be shared; that does not make every N55 or S55 procedure interchangeable. Confirm fitment rather than assuming either that everything matches or that nothing does.
Ready to plan the work
Keep the VIN-specific parts confirmation, procedure revision and service record together. The broad PHTM spark-plug overview can help you understand the job, but it does not replace the engine-specific instructions.
