Before the viewing

Ask for the VIN, an unedited service history and a list of modifications. Match invoices to dates and mileage; a photograph of a service screen is not a record of the work performed. Ask the seller to leave the engine cold. Set an inspection budget before negotiating the purchase so attractive wheels or paint do not consume the money needed to establish the car’s condition.

Inspect the configuration

Photograph all four tire sizes, wheel specifications where visible, brake equipment and suspension changes. APEX’s F30 guide separates fitment by brake clearance and drivetrain, which is why an attractive setup deserves more than a visual approval. Ask for original parts and alignment records. Verify the car’s equipment against its VIN-specific manual; badges and aftermarket screens are not reliable equipment records.

Record symptoms without diagnosing them

During a legal, accompanied test drive, note whether a vibration follows road speed, braking or acceleration. Check every window, climate-control function, camera and infotainment source while parked. Photograph visible leaks and warning messages. Do not accept a cleared warning as proof of a repair; request the diagnosis and invoice that explain it.

Make the inspection independent

Use a BMW-experienced workshop to inspect the underside, scan the control units and assess leaks, cooling, brakes and suspension. Give them your observations rather than a shopping list of presumed failures. Ask for findings grouped into immediate safety work, near-term maintenance and optional improvements. A seller refusing an independent inspection creates an unresolved information gap, even if the car feels good on a short drive.

Turn findings into a decision

Price the required work using written estimates and decide whether the total still fits your budget. Keep unresolved questions separate from confirmed faults. This checklist is a way to commission an inspection, not a promise that a particular engine or mileage is trouble-free.
