The First 25: More Than a Number.

The cars brought us together. The people are what make it matter.

A driver profile can start with very little: a photograph, a username, a car. Stay with it for a moment and the details begin to matter. Someone chose those wheels. Someone decided to keep the manual gearbox, make a part themselves, or turn a show build into something they could drive every day. The interesting question becomes less about what the car has and more about why its owner wanted it that way.

That curiosity is where the Founding 25 belongs.

PHTM began with an automotive page and the ambition to give the people on it somewhere to belong. A photograph could introduce a build, but a passing post had limits. We wanted to be able to come back to the same driver, follow what changed, and keep the earlier chapters in view. The Founding 25 gave that intention a starting point: twenty-five original drivers, each with a permanent place in PHTM’s beginnings.

A place to come back to

In our first Journal entry, we wrote about building beyond an Instagram feed. The practical version of that idea is fairly simple. Give an owner a dedicated profile. Make room for the photographs, the details and the decisions behind the car. Let that profile develop as there is more to share.

It also asks something of PHTM. If we say the people matter, we have to pay attention to them after the first feature. A number and a page are only useful if we treat them as the beginning of an ongoing story.

At the time of writing, the published roster reaches Founding 011. Eleven of the twenty-five places have been filled. Founder 000 stands separately. It is still a small enough group that you can spend time with every profile, notice the differences and begin to recognize the cars without reading the handles beneath them.

That feels like the right scale for a beginning. There is room to listen while the shape of PHTM is still being worked out.

Why twenty-five?

The name sets a clear boundary around the original group: 001 through 025. Each number stays attached to its place in that first chapter.

There is no performance table hidden in the numbering. Founding 001 does not outrank 011, and an earlier number does not make a car more interesting. The number records a connection to the beginning. It should never become a reason to dismiss someone who arrives later.

For us, the permanence matters more than the exclusivity. Cars change. An owner might rethink a build, move toward a different platform or decide that the version already in the driveway is the one worth keeping. A founding number gives that evolving story a consistent point of reference.

The aim is to remember who was here while PHTM was taking shape. We can do that without pretending the best of the community will always fit inside twenty-five places.

Different answers to the same question

Even among the BMWs that currently make up the roster, there is no single recipe.

Founding 003, Deepan — @tonedowned_340i — approaches his 2016 340i with fabrication as part of the build. His published profile describes front flares and a front lip he designed himself. F80 Competition seats and door cards bring another strand of BMW into the cabin. Those details say something specific about his approach: the finished shape does not have to be limited to the parts already on a shelf.

Founding 008, @ba_germans, takes a different direction with a 2007 E92 328xi. The factory six-speed manual remains central to the car, supported by a short-throw shifter, Turner Motorsport intake and exhaust, Morr wheels and H&R springs. The interest is in how those choices work with the original car. A naturally aspirated 3 Series has a place here alongside the M cars, without needing to explain away its badge.

Then there is Founding 010, @louisvuitton_m3. His 2018 F80 M3 Competition carries a detailed visual theme through the body, cabin and trunk. Air suspension and custom wheels are part of the picture, but his existing profile makes another point worth keeping in view: this is a daily driver. The elaborate presentation is something its owner wants to use, rather than reserve for an occasional appearance.

Three builds, three different priorities. Comparing them only by power or money would miss most of what makes them worth looking at.

Leave room for the person

A modification list can tell us what is fitted. It cannot, on its own, tell us what someone values about owning the car.

That takes attention, and sometimes patience. Not every member arrives with a finished biography or a complete record of every change. Founding 011, Matt Defran — @defranrq46 — is currently introduced through his green G80 M3 CS, with further build details still to come. There is no need to fill that space with assumptions. The photographs can introduce the car while the owner’s account develops.

The same care should apply to the way we talk about each other. A large following is not a substitute for personality. A long parts list is not proof of commitment. Someone’s choices may be completely different from ours and still deserve a closer look.

PHTM has clear BMW roots. That is visible throughout these first profiles, and there is no reason to disguise it. But the welcome we want to offer cannot depend on owning a particular model or reaching a particular budget. What matters is an interest in cars and a willingness to make space for the people who enjoy them differently.

A beginning that stays open

The Founding 25 will eventually become a complete original class. The wider community should keep going.

There will be other drivers to feature, other photographs to spend time with and other approaches that challenge our own taste. Closing the original roster should preserve its history while leaving those possibilities open. We would be missing the point if the first group became a wall around everything that followed.

For now, these profiles document a community while it is still forming. Some stories are detailed. Others are only starting to be written. Each belongs to someone who chose to be part of PHTM early enough that the next chapter was still uncertain.

Years from now, the numbers can tell us where it started. The people will explain why it was worth continuing.
