Bonded contamination can leave washed paint feeling rough. Swirls and scratches are defects in the finish. Meguiar’s distinguishes claying from abrasive paint cleaning: one is not a universal replacement for the other.

Inspect a clean test area
Wash first, inspect under good light and test the least aggressive suitable method. Lubricate clay as instructed. Do not rub harder to remove a scratch with clay; that can add marring without addressing the defect.

Know the limit
Compounding removes some finish while correcting defects. Deep damage, thin paint, matte finishes and unknown repairs require care or professional assessment. Protect the corrected surface using a compatible product. More steps are not automatically better when the paint does not need them.
