Read the right reference
The 2003 325i Sedan manual uses the red float against the filler-neck reference. Follow its illustrated marks rather than filling the tank to the brim. Do not transfer this check to an unfamiliar tank or a modified cooling system.

Let the engine cool
Do not open a hot cooling system. With the engine cold, loosen the cap gradually so any remaining pressure can escape before removal.

Check without overfilling
Compare the float with the manual’s level illustration. If topping up is needed, first establish the coolant approved for your exact vehicle; add slowly and stop at the correct level. This guide intentionally provides no universal coolant mix or capacity.

Turn the check into useful evidence
Record the date, the cold reading and any recent cooling-system work. Photograph the tank and the warning message without reaching near moving or hot components. Tell the workshop whether the warning returned after a top-up and whether the car overheated; do not label the expansion tank, thermostat or pump as failed from the level alone.
What comes next
A recurring low reading needs leak diagnosis. Keep the vehicle’s manual and maintenance history with your notes so the repair can be scoped to its actual engine and cooling system.
