The documented E46 issue

BMW’s historical recall describes the body-side rear lamp ground connection on the listed sedans. Tail, brake or turn-signal functions can be affected. The trunk-lid lamp portion is outside that specific fault description.

What to do next

Record which functions fail and whether the warning is intermittent. Ask a BMW center to check the VIN’s recall history and inspect the connector/ground repair where applicable. The remedy may involve a ground connection and damaged connector parts rather than only a bulb.
