Check the airbox before ordering
This procedure is for the original N20/N26 328i airbox illustrated by FCP Euro. An aftermarket intake needs its own filter and instructions. Compare the replacement element’s application and sealing shape with the installed unit. Photograph the intake connection and sensor lead before starting; a quick filter job should not create a new warning light.

Open the housing
With the engine off and cool, release the intake-tube clamp, disconnect the airflow-sensor connector at its latch and release the airbox clips. Lift the lid without stretching the harness or levering against the sensor. Keep dirt out of the clean-air side. Stop if the housing arrangement differs from the illustrated source rather than forcing unfamiliar fasteners.

Replace and seat
Remove the old element and clear loose debris from the dirty side of the box without pushing it into the intake. Fit the correct new element evenly in its channel. Check the entire sealing edge before closing the lid; a corner folded under the cover defeats the point of a new filter. Do not wash or oil a disposable paper element.

Close and inspect
Latch the housing fully, reconnect the tube and secure its clamp, then reconnect the sensor. Check that the cover sits evenly and the harness is clear. Start and observe normal operation. Record the date, mileage and filter part number. If the old element is wet, damaged or unusually dirty on its clean side, investigate the cause instead of treating replacement alone as the repair.
