Four numbers are not a fitment guarantee
Diameter, width, offset and tire size describe different parts of the package. Wheel width and offset determine where the wheel sits; tire dimensions and construction influence the space the complete assembly occupies. A similar-looking wheel may have a different spoke profile and brake clearance. Confirm the exact wheel model, not just the advertised size.
Use a documented starting point
APEX’s F30 guide includes an 18-by-8.5-inch square arrangement with several documented offsets and a 235/40-18 tire option. That is a manufacturer-specific starting point, not a promise that every wheel with those numbers clears every brake package. Use its full fitment notes and the wheel maker’s clearance process. Never identify brake clearance solely from caliper color.
Square or staggered?
A square setup uses the same nominal wheel and tire sizes front and rear; a staggered setup differs between axles. Choose based on your use and the fitment evidence, not appearance alone. Rotation possibilities also depend on the tires and their directional requirements. If comparing staggered packages, assess the front and rear as a pair rather than buying each axle independently.
xDrive needs the complete tire pairing
APEX calls out xDrive-specific tire combinations in its fitment guidance. Do not apply a generic online percentage rule as a universal BMW approval. Confirm the permitted pairing for the exact car and inspect the tire maker’s specifications; wear and actual rolling characteristics matter beyond the nominal sidewall numbers. If the proposed setup is uncertain, obtain a vehicle-specific answer before ordering.
Lowered cars need another clearance check
Measure suspension-side and fender-side space, and consider steering and suspension travel rather than only the parked stance. Ask whether a recommendation assumes alignment changes, particular suspension or body modifications. Request a brake template or documented clearance confirmation where available.
Keep a record of wheel model, dimensions, tire model and size, ride height and alignment. That makes your own fitment experience useful to another enthusiast without presenting it as a universal recipe.
