Garmin Dash Cam Mini 3: mount, power and verify recording

Install a Garmin Mini 3 using its supplied vehicle adapter, prepare the memory card and check the finished recording before relying on it.

GUIDE OVERVIEW

Difficulty
Basic · 2/5
Time
PHTM planning estimate: 30–45 min
Vehicle / platform
Garmin Dash Cam Mini 3; supplied vehicle power adapter. No hardwire, airbag-trim or universal vehicle-fitment procedure.
Tools
  • Lint-free cloth
  • Water or alcohol suitable for the glass
  • Phone with Garmin Drive
Parts / supplies
  • Garmin Dash Cam Mini 3 and supplied adhesive mount
  • Supplied camera cable and vehicle power adapter
  • Memory card meeting the Mini 3 manual
STEP 01

Prepare the card

Insert the compatible card until it clicks. Power the camera with its supplied adapter. A new card must be formatted; Mini 3 uses FAT32. Hold the audio button for eight seconds. The status light becomes green during formatting and red when recording starts. Do not interrupt this operation.

STEP 02

Mock up the position

Garmin recommends an ambient 21–38°C for adhesive installation. Clean the inside glass with water or alcohol and a lint-free cloth; remove dust, oils, wax and coatings. Hold the camera in position and inspect the field of view in Garmin Drive before exposing the adhesive. Keep the camera and cable out of the driver’s view and away from vehicle sensors.

STEP 03

Bond the mount

Once the position is confirmed, remove the adhesive film, align the mount and press it firmly against the glass for 30 seconds. The bond is intended to be long term, so repositioning by trial and error is a poor installation method.

STEP 04

Use the supplied power adapter

Connect the camera cable and route it securely to the accessory outlet, then connect the supplied vehicle adapter. Switch on the ignition if that outlet requires it. Avoid powering Mini 3 from the car’s USB port: Garmin warns that insufficient power can cause unreliable operation, and a data cable may put the camera in storage mode instead of recording.

Check what the camera actually captured

Play back a fresh clip and check the view, focus through the windshield and cable clearance. Repeat after turning the vehicle off and back on. If the camera lights up but does not record, check the card state and power connection before replacing parts. Record the installed camera model, card model and power arrangement in your build notes; these details make a support request useful.
