Troubleshooting

OBDLink MX+ will not connect: isolate the failed link

Separate adapter power, Bluetooth pairing and vehicle communication when an OBDLink MX+ fails to connect in the OBDLink app.

GUIDE OVERVIEW

Difficulty
Introductory · 1/5
Time
PHTM planning estimate: 10–20 min
Vehicle / platform
OBDLink MX+ with OBDLink app on iOS or Android; not the original MX, MX Wi-Fi, CX or LX.
Tools
  • Phone with OBDLink app
  • Vehicle owner’s manual
Parts / supplies
  • OBDLink MX+
STEP 01

Read the MX+ indicators

A steady POWER light indicates the adapter is ready; periodic green flashes with the engine off indicate sleep. Rapid blue BT flashes mean pairing mode, steady blue means an active phone connection, and slow blue flashes mean it is waiting for an already-paired device. Alternating red OBD and yellow HOST flashes with a fault are a reason to contact support.

STEP 02

Establish a clean phone session

Close other OBD apps and stop other Bluetooth streaming. MX+ can serve only one app at a time. Reseat it, press Pair and pair through the phone’s Bluetooth settings. In OBDLink use Settings, then Set Up New Adapter for the first connection or a new vehicle. Allow up to 45–60 seconds for it to appear. Follow the app’s permission prompts.

STEP 03

Check protocol selection

If phone pairing works but vehicle connection does not, use Settings → Preferences → Communications. Choose Automatic for OBD-II Protocol and disable Start with Last Connected Protocol, then reconnect.

STEP 04

Use the model-specific reset only if needed

After the preceding checks, MX+ can be reset by holding its button for 15 seconds, until POWER flashes rapidly and returns steady. Remove the old phone pairing, press Pair again and repeat the connection wizard. This resets MX+, not vehicle fault memory.

Verify a useful result

A successful check means the app reaches the vehicle and displays plausible data, not just that the phone says paired. Keep any vehicle faults intact for diagnosis. If the same failure returns, send support the exact adapter model, vehicle year/make/model, app and phone versions, error text, LED behavior and steps already tried. Avoid repeating resets indefinitely: a concise failure record is more useful than a cleared history.
