Stop spinning an unloaded wheel

Mazda specifically warns against spinning a wheel that is off the ground when the vehicle is stuck or in a ditch. The drive assembly can be damaged. AWD capability does not make sustained wheelspin a safe recovery technique.

Assess the situation before applying power

Stop, inspect the surrounding ground from a safe position and determine whether the vehicle is grounded or unevenly supported. Do not climb beneath a stranded vehicle. Seek appropriate recovery assistance if it cannot be moved safely.

Treat warnings separately

The manual notes that AWD operating conditions and faults can produce warnings. Follow the displayed message and the model’s warning-light guidance instead of assuming the system simply needs more throttle. This article applies only to AWD-equipped 2020 Mazda3 models; it does not describe towing or a universal recovery procedure.
