The preferred starting point

Use the same tire model and appropriate specification at all positions unless the vehicle specifies a different arrangement. Factory staggered sizes are an intentional exception to equal dimensions, not permission to mix unrelated constructions or seasons.

Why one replacement needs thought

Compare remaining tread depth, size, load and speed ratings, construction and intended season. AWD vehicles can impose additional rolling-circumference limits. A matching size printed on the sidewall does not guarantee the new and worn tires behave identically.

Ask the fitter a precise question

Bring the vehicle specification and measurements of the remaining tires. Ask whether a single replacement meets the vehicle manufacturer’s requirements, or whether a pair or complete set is necessary. Do not use a universal allowable tread difference copied from a different AWD system.
