E9X 2A37 / 2A47 faults: check the diagnostic path

What BMW’s eccentric-shaft sensor bulletin covers, and why fault codes alone do not prove which parts need replacement.

What the workshop should distinguish

The reported symptoms include rough running, an engine warning light or cranking without starting. The bulletin calls for checking the sensor connector and the DME-side wiring for oil. If that contamination is absent, its repair branch does not apply: continue the diagnostic test plan.

Useful information before inspection

STEP 01

Identify the application

Save the VIN, engine identification and a full fault report. A chassis nickname such as E9X cannot distinguish all the engines in this generation.

STEP 02

Record what changed

Note whether the problem followed valve-cover work, plug or coil work, a jump start, or no obvious event. Keep the first symptom separate from any faults that appeared after parts were disconnected.

Avoid the parts cascade

Ask for the actual findings at the connectors and wiring before authorizing a sensor, harness or control-unit repair. The extent of contamination matters; one fault label is not proof that the entire system is damaged.

After diagnosis

Keep the measured findings and repair record. If the same complaint returns, those details are more useful than a list of parts already replaced.
