Identify which system you have
Record the MMI manufacturer, model, software version and original BMW head unit. Factory CarPlay, an MMI and a replacement Android screen are different systems. This guide addresses aftermarket MMI audio diagnosis, with BimmerTech documentation as the example. Do not apply another supplier’s wiring or firmware instructions to an unidentified unit.

Check the selected audio route
BimmerTech documents both AUX-based configurations and Digital Bluetooth Audio on supported configurations. A working CarPlay image does not prove the car is listening to the correct audio source. Read the instructions for the installed version and confirm the selected route in both systems. Do not assume every retrofit needs an AUX cable or every version supports direct Bluetooth audio.

Use a small test matrix
While parked, test factory radio, CarPlay music, navigation prompts and a phone call separately. Record which have sound and which microphone is used. Check mute and the relevant source volume. Try one known-working phone after preserving the current settings. Changing several pairing and audio options together makes the result harder to interpret.

Escalate with evidence
If factory audio also fails, explain that broader symptom to the installer. If only MMI audio fails, send the supplier the configuration and test matrix. Ask whether harness routing or software settings need inspection. Do not unplug optical connections or install firmware from a look-alike box as a first step. Keep original BMW functions working while the retrofit problem is isolated.
