F30 1D2008 and slow warm-up: two thermostat paths

Why an automatic F3X with 1D2008 needs diagnosis of the cooling circuits before an engine thermostat is ordered.

Make
BMW
Model years / scope
No model-year boundary given in the cited bulletin; verify the VIN and production scope.
Engine
N20 / N26 / N55 repair scope; match the actual engine to the VIN.
Drivetrain
Not restricted in the cited bulletin; verify the actual vehicle configuration.
Transmission
Automatic only
Region
BMW of North America service information; other markets require confirmation.

Manual-transmission cars and other engines are not included in this starter. A code description is not a parts diagnosis.

What the symptom can tell you

The bulletin pairs the engine warning with possible weak cabin heat in cold weather. That combination helps select a test plan; it does not establish which thermostat is faulty.

Before the appointment

STEP 01

Save the fault and conditions

Keep the complete scan, outside temperature, journey length and heater behavior. Note whether the engine began cold and whether the complaint changes after a longer drive.

STEP 02

Confirm the configuration

Provide the VIN, engine and transmission. A guide for an automatic cooling circuit should not be copied onto a manual car because both wear an F30 badge.

The useful question to ask

Ask whether both relevant circuits were tested. BMW specifies a cold-engine workshop check of the transmission heat-exchanger path. It involves coolant lines and proper equipment; this article deliberately does not turn it into an improvised hose-clamping test.

After the cause is established

Use the current VIN-specific parts and repair instructions. Keep the diagnostic result with the invoice so any recurring warning can be compared with what was actually checked.
