Troubleshooting

VW/Audi P0299: separate boost leaks from turbo faults

Separate charge-path leakage, diverter-valve problems and engine-specific turbo faults.

Vehicle / platform
VW/Audi engines reporting P0299; engine-specific notes are not universal.
Tools
  • VCDS or compatible diagnostic tool
  • Vehicle-specific repair information
Parts / supplies
  • No replacement part selected by the code alone
STEP 01

Inspect the boost path

Check connecting hoses and pipes for incorrect assembly, disconnection or leakage. Include the diverter valve and boost-control system in the inspection plan before selecting a replacement turbo.

STEP 02

Use engine-specific evidence

For applicable 2.0 TFSI engines, Ross-Tech directs attention to a cracked N249 diverter-valve diaphragm. For 2009–2012 Audi CAEB engines it points to excessive wastegate play and the relevant Audi bulletin. These are separate diagnostic branches, not interchangeable repairs.

If the plumbing checks out

Turbo mechanical damage and an exhaust restriction can also produce this code. Have those conditions tested using the correct engine procedure. When misfire or fuel-trim codes are present too, investigate the associated PCV fault guidance.
