Look beyond the leak
Gates’ failure bulletin illustrates deposits, corrosion, cavitation and chemical attack on water pumps. Those observations can point to a cooling-system condition that deserves investigation alongside the failed component. A photograph alone cannot establish the exact cause.

Check the coolant history
Record the coolant products used, dilution method, service history and any mixing or repeated topping-up. Gates recommends an appropriate flush and the correct fresh coolant when these conditions are found, with pump replacement depending on the damage.

Follow the vehicle procedure
Select the approved coolant and filling or bleeding method for the engine. Do not assume every cooling circuit can be flushed or bled in the same way. Have the system checked for leaks and restored operation after the repair rather than treating a new pump as proof the whole system is healthy.
