A hose assembly has several failure points
Modern coolant hoses may incorporate plastic connectors and branches. Gates notes that heat exposure can make these connectors brittle, with vibration or movement during service contributing to cracking. Good-looking rubber does not establish that the whole assembly is sound.

Inspect only when safe
With the engine fully cool, look for dried coolant residue, damaged connectors and evidence that the hose is rubbing nearby parts. Do not open a hot pressurized cooling system or aggressively flex an aged fitting to see whether it breaks.

Replace the correct assembly
Match the engine, routing and connector arrangement. Replace seals and retaining pieces as specified, then use the proper fill and leak-check procedure. If access requires moving a brittle neighboring hose, include that risk in the repair plan before the vehicle is dismantled.
