Get out of traffic

Pull over safely, secure the vehicle and turn off the air conditioning. If steam is escaping, stop the engine and stay away from the front until it dissipates. Do not open the hood through escaping steam or remove a hot cooling-system cap.

Do not improvise around the fan

Mazda’s full procedure distinguishes steam or leakage from other conditions. Keep clear of the cooling fan, which can operate after the engine stops. If the fan does not operate when required, leakage is evident or the warning persists, arrange assistance rather than continuing.

After it cools

Only inspect coolant level when safe and cool. Record the warning, outside temperature, driving load and any recent cooling-system work. A repeated overheat needs diagnosis even if topping up temporarily clears the warning. This roadside guide is not a coolant bleeding or repair procedure.
