Read the reservoir

With the car parked safely, compare the fluid level with MIN and MAX. On manual-transmission applications the brake and clutch systems share the reservoir. Use the correct vehicle fluid specification if service is required.

Understand a low level

Fluid level can fall as brake pads wear, but leakage is another possibility. Do not simply fill the reservoir repeatedly or assume a warning is normal. A soft pedal, visible leak or braking warning requires prompt assessment; do not road-test a car with uncertain braking.

Give the workshop context

Record pad-service history, recent hydraulic work and whether the level changed suddenly. Ask for both a wear and leak inspection. Topping up can conceal the original condition and can leave the reservoir overfilled when new pads are later installed.
