Read it cold

Check the reservoir with the engine cool. The level should sit between its LOW and FULL markings. Do not remove a cooling-system cap while hot; pressurized coolant can cause severe burns. Keep hands and clothing away from the cooling fan even after switching off.

Match the coolant

Mazda specifies FL22 when that designation is marked on or near the cooling-system cap. Confirm the actual vehicle label and manual before adding fluid. Color alone is not a compatibility specification, and an unknown mixture is not solved by adding a second product.

When to investigate

An empty reservoir or repeated need for coolant requires inspection. Photograph the cold level, note the date and mileage and document residue or drips. Do not continue driving with overheating symptoms while trying to establish a trend.
