Work on a clean surface

Wash and dry the area, then inspect in good light. A mineral deposit on top of the finish and a mark etched into it can look similar. Do not begin with aggressive polishing solely because ordinary shampoo left a spot.

Test the appropriate chemistry

Use a water-spot product approved for the actual surface, following its label and a small test area. Keep it off excluded materials and do not let it dry. A product described for glass and paint still has application instructions and limits.

Stop when cleaning stops helping

If the deposit is gone but a mark remains, assess the finish before removing material. Thin paint, prior repairs, matte surfaces and coated glass need particular care. Avoid making one stubborn spot into a larger polished patch.
