Two functions
A bypass arrangement allows oil flow around restricted filter media under its designed conditions. An anti-drainback valve limits oil draining backward when the engine is off. One does not replace the other.

Location varies
The relevant valve may be in the filter or elsewhere in the engine’s filter system. A cartridge listing without a valve is not automatically defective or inferior. The correct design depends on the application.

Do not choose by appearance
Match the cataloged filter and any installation instructions. If a removed element is collapsed or damaged, preserve it and investigate the system rather than assuming a larger filter is the solution. A filter comparison needs the engine’s requirements, not only a cut-open photograph.
