Identify when the smell appears

A musty odor when the blower starts can involve moisture and contamination around the evaporator, not only a dirty cabin filter. Record whether it occurs with cooling on, ventilation alone or after the car has sat overnight.

Start with accessible maintenance

Inspect and replace the cabin filter according to the vehicle procedure. Check for wet carpets or other water-entry evidence that would require a separate repair. A scented spray can conceal the symptom without removing its cause.

Use appropriate cleaning

DENSO warns that unsuitable chemicals can damage the evaporator coating. Persistent contamination may need professional evaporator cleaning. Follow the vehicle’s operating advice; DENSO also suggests leaving the blower running briefly after switching cooling off to help dry internal surfaces.
