Respond to the warning
Follow the vehicle manual and stop safely if other warnings, overheating or deteriorating operation accompany it. Do not assume the car can travel a predictable distance on the remaining battery. Electrical demand and battery condition vary.

Check the full system
DENSO recommends checking the battery, belt, wiring and voltage drops before alternator replacement. A damaged drive or poor connection can mimic an alternator problem. Modern regulated charging also makes one universal running-voltage target unreliable.

Preserve the evidence
Record when the warning appears, weather, electrical loads and recent work. Have the system tested under the appropriate conditions. Never disconnect the battery while the engine runs as a test; use the documented diagnostic method.
