Record the conditions
Note whether the noise occurs at cold start, under electrical load, with air conditioning or after water exposure. Keep hands, clothing and tools away from a running belt drive. Do not spray chemicals into moving components to see what changes.

Inspect as a system
Gates identifies tensioners and pulleys as important contributors to belt-drive problems. With the engine safely off, a qualified inspection should consider routing, contamination, alignment, bearing condition and tensioner behavior. A shiny new belt cannot compensate for a faulty supporting component.

Plan the repair
Use the correct routing and part numbers, and follow the vehicle-specific release and installation procedure. Ask the workshop to record the root cause. Repeatedly replacing the belt without that diagnosis can reproduce the same noise and wear.
