Identify the actual timing system

Confirm whether the engine uses a belt or chain and whether the water pump is timing-belt driven. A general mileage rule from another engine is not a maintenance schedule for yours. Use the manufacturer’s time and distance limits.

Think about shared labor

Gates recommends treating timing-drive components as a system. On a belt-driven-pump application, access overlap and component condition can make a complete service preferable to replacing only the belt. Obtain an itemized quote for tensioners, idlers, pump, seals and required hardware.

Do not improvise the procedure

Timing work can require locking tools, tensioning sequences and one-use fasteners. Incorrect timing can cause severe damage. Use an engine-specific procedure and qualified help where needed; this planning guide is not a set of timing marks or torque instructions.
