Capture the operating snapshot

Freeze-frame data records available operating parameters associated with a detected fault. Save it before clearing codes. Engine speed, load, temperature and vehicle speed can help distinguish an idle complaint from a fault that occurred under load.

Compare like conditions

Use the snapshot to guide a safe diagnostic plan, not to recreate a dangerous driving event. Compare readings with the correct vehicle’s expected behavior. A single parameter outside your expectation is a clue, not proof that its sensor is faulty.

Know the limits

Available parameters and retained snapshots vary by vehicle and scan tool. Missing data does not prove that a fault never occurred. Share the original scan and symptoms with the technician so subsequent testing builds on the evidence instead of starting after everything has been erased.
