Clearing changes the evidence

Erasing codes can reset emissions-monitor readiness to incomplete. An incomplete monitor means the relevant test has not yet finished since the reset; it is not by itself a diagnosis of a failed component.

Use the correct drive conditions

Different monitors require different operating conditions. Follow vehicle-specific guidance rather than a universal mileage promise. Do not attempt unsafe traffic maneuvers or run a vehicle in an enclosed space to complete a suggested drive cycle.

Confirm more than the dashboard light

After repair, check current faults and monitor progress together. A light that stays off immediately after erasing is weaker evidence than a completed test without the fault returning. If a monitor repeatedly fails to complete, investigate its enabling conditions and related faults instead of resetting it again.
