STEP 01

Keep a repeatable log

Record the odometer, the amount added, the oil used and how the level was measured. Note driving conditions and visible leaks. Follow the model’s own level-check procedure each time.

Sources 1

STEP 02

Investigate leakage first

Have fresh leaks located before interpreting the log as oil burned internally. A controlled workshop consumption test may be necessary if ordinary readings cannot answer the question.

Sources 1

STEP 03

Avoid the turbo shortcut

Oil residue in charge plumbing alone does not prove a turbocharger has failed. BMW’s diagnostic discussion also considers crankcase ventilation and operating conditions.
